VISITING CYPRUS? Happy Banana

CEPT AGREEMENT
This Agreement applies to visitors from 3A 9A CT DL EA EI ES F G GD GI GJ GM GU GW HA HB9 HB0 I LA LX LY LZ OE OH OK OM ON OZ PA S5 SM SP SV T9 TA TF UX YL, also 4X OA PJ VE W ZL ZS, (and probably CU OX OY and French Possessions too, but check with the Ministry.)

If you hold a licence equivalent to CEPT Class 1 or 2 from one of the above countries and visit Cyprus, you are allowed to operate from the Republic for a couple of months, signing 5B/'homecall'. (5B4/'homecall' is not correct). (What licence? eg in G any callsign other than M3 (Foundation) or 2E (Intermediate) types, and in W a Technician licence or higher).

If your country is not on the list above, please contact the Ministry of Communications & Works to enquire whether you may operate with a temporary reciprocal permit. This permit now has to be on paper, and not just verbal.

Norman 5B4AIE has a contest club station 5B4AIF set up near Pafos where he sometimes allows visiting Hams to operate, contact him at

It is a good idea to bring and have with you whenever you are operating, a copy of your licence, as the police can be a little sensitive to foreigners with radio equipment.

The Cyprus Frequency Schedule is HERE

Because of the CEPT agreement, if you do not intend to leave your Amateur Radio equipment here you may import it on a temporary basis without payment of taxes. The Ministry of Communications has sent a circular to the Customs Department informing them of this. Unfortunately you may occasionally meet a customs officer who has not read or does not remember this circular and who will insist that it is not allowed. In that case please try to contact the Ministry of Communications and Works.

The Ministry of Communications & Works (Radio Licensing) has moved. The new address and telephone numbers are on the Callsigns & Licences page.

ALSO: You may contact a CARS Official, see the Officers page.

If you are coming to live here, see the Callsigns & Licences page.

Please note. You may not operate from the UK Sovereign Base Areas of Dekelia, Akrotiri, Episcopi etc. These (ZC4) areas are quite large, irregular in shape and with exclusions and are mostly not signposted when you enter them, except for the military parts. For a guide to their locations see the free map you can get from Cyprus Tourist Organisation, or the small one on the Callsigns & Licences  page.

Note also that ZC4 is not part of the CEPT agreement, so you may not operate ZC4/homecall  - also unless you are posted to Cyprus as a UKSBA serviceman or employee you won't easily get a ZC4 licence.

QSL INFO
Please remember to always give out your QSL info whenever you operate on the air from Cyprus, as many Amateurs will want your card. The 5B QSL bureau gets many QSL cards that are addressed to foreign amateurs who have operated from Cyprus, and these are usually destroyed, as CARS has neither the information nor the funds to forward these cards to their intended recipients.

CASUAL INTERNET DIALUP

Can you make it to a Monthly Ham Lunch? See Club Meetings & Other Events page.
