CALLSIGNS

The prefixes 5B C4 H2 and P3 are allocated to the Republic of Cyprus. No other prefixes are legal. (Amateurs in the northern part of Cyprus, which is occupied by Turkey, north of the UN buffer zone (Green Line) are sometimes heard using the prefix 1B, but as they are in Cyprus this prefix is illegal).

ZC4 is allocated to the UK Sovereign Base areas of Cyprus, another DXCC entity altogether.

Getting a 5B Licence

  • HERE is the full 5B (CEPT) licence with the operating conditions. Note. An unofficial translation into English is included.(Thanks to Ivan G1LPW for most of the translation). Note also, the 40m band is now 7.0 - 7.2 MHz (ref. HERE )
  • HERE is the updated frequency schedule only. (We have applied for a 4m allocation, nothing heard yet.)
  • HERE is a clue to which other CEPT countries it is valid in. (Note: Their frequency bands, power etc may be different from ours).
  • HERE is the Region 1 HF Bandplan.

All Cyprus licencees, 5B4 or 5B8, are allowed to work all bands.

  • HERE is the Licence Application Form (updated 2006-06-05) - print a copy and fill it out.

Send also 

  • A copy of your birth certificate
  • €51.26 for the application/callsign
  • A further €25.63 per year to operate
  • Your Amateur Radio Operator Certificate OR your examination pass slip, OR a copy of your foreign (CEPT only) licence OR HAREC certificate 

There is no longer a morse code requirement for a licence.

A Certificate of Good Conduct from your local Cyprus police is no longer required!

If you don't hear anything after a few days, you may wish to telephone to check all is in order. (The Ministry works 7.45-14.30 on weekdays only.)

Licence Examinations

The Ministry of Communications and Works occasionally holds examinations. These will be announced on the CARS News page, but you can telephone the Ministry and ask that they arrange one. The last exam was held on 8 February 2007.

  • HERE is the Examination Application Form (in Greek). If you do not read Greek HERE is a translation into English (thanks Marinos 5B4AEZ)  -  but send in the completed Greek form. The Exam itself is usually given in English.
  • HERE is the syllabus (CEPT/ERC/T-R 61-02).
  • HERE are suggestions of study material for the exam.

Change of Address

The Ministry make a charge of €25.63 for a change of address, or any other change to your details.

Special calls

Temporary special callsigns with prefixes 5B C4 H2 and P3 have been issued for specific special events, contests etc.

Any 5B licencee can apply for a permanent special (contest) call (to be used only during contests). Send a letter to the Ministry, and a copy to CARS Secretary, requesting the call you want, and if all goes to plan you will get approval in a few weeks.

Note. Personal Contest Calls are for use ONLY by the licensee. Multi-op contest operation may take place only at a club station, or under a personal callsign if permission for the specific contest has been obtained in advance from the Ministry.
